Growth Scan

Growth scans are typically carried out between weeks 28 and 36 of pregnancy, during the third phase of pregnancy. Multiple growth scans may be recommended at regular intervals in high-risk pregnancies.

Why is a Growth Scan Important?

  • Assess amniotic fluid levels

  • Monitor baby’s weight and size

  • Monitor high-risk pregnancies closely

  • Evaluate placental position and function

  • Check for growth restriction or excessive growth

  • Check baby’s presentation (head-down or breech)

Who Needs a Growth Scan?

  • Reduced fetal movements

  • Twin or multiple pregnancies

  • Suspected low or large baby size

  • Previous pregnancy complications

  • Underweight or overweight mothers

  • High blood pressure or diabetes in pregnancy

What Does a Growth Scan Measure?

  • Femur length

  • Placental maturity

  • Head circumference

  • Estimated fetal weight

  • Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI)

  • Abdominal circumference

  • Doppler blood flow (if required)
